I did not expect this to happen, but I watched this the other day and it became one of the dearest films to my heart. I don’t think I’m going to watch it again, because there is no purpose and because I would feel a burning nostalgia the second time around. What is said is watching this one in 2022, in the future, when all of these people and their dreams have been shattered, their hopes were made impossible. A hope always keeps hoping, you might object. But, like a butterfly, it must have air to soar in. I don’t know… Where the role-players? Not counting Harry Potterites. Where are the Wiccans? Maybe some still exist, keep very low. Nothing like this, when, as the plot here shows, there was even a possibility for big-name publicity for such troupes, if they committed to making sacrifices. They did not have to eke it out on the distant fringes of society – they could have a grounds to themselves, some distance away from the center. This was a way of life, not just of death. And today? I don’t know. The surrounding society would be much more averse to them. These are not people who use smartphones, to be sure. Plain cellphones, yes, maybe, but that’s not enough to fit in any more. I watched “Unabomber” recently, not a bad movie, but the action is in the middle 90s – 15 and more years after 1981 here. And how far down the slope! And how distant even THOSE situations and struggles look from today! But maybe these people hold on. Maybe.
